How Cyberbullying adversely affects reputation?

Cyber bullying is not something new, however the reality is that not enough attention have been paid to ensure its prevention. Cyber bullying could very badly influence the online reputation of companies and individuals.

Cyber bullying involves the following

  • The  misuse of  communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behavior by an individual or group
  • Hacking into accounts and posting wrong and often scandalous  information
  • Vicious forum posts,
  • Name calling in chat rooms,
  • Posting fake profiles on web sites,
  • Sending threatening or mean  email messages
  • Redirecting hits to spam or porn sites

Although it is not a  physical attack, it can do  extensive damage to the reputation of the other person. Nobody is immune to the attacks of cyber bullies, however, most of the  cyber bullying incidents involve kids and young adults. The recent cyber bullying tactics of Justin Beiber haters and how these have affected his online image should be a perfect example of the intricate relation between online reputation and cyber bullying.  Negative posts and bad elements gain acclaim through shared videos or online forums and it could assume viral proportions in no time.

Your online reputation can be protected by keeping the slanderous posts at bay and for this an array of ORM tools like SEM and SEO are being used with success. Cyber bullying could well be an expression of revenge or a projection of their own insecurities. The online community has a collective responsibility to bring justice to those who are victims of cyber bullying.

Can the Mel Gibson reputation ever recover?

Mel Gibson is once again in the news, well this time again not for his celebrity image, but the ‘Brave Heart’ actor seems to have lost it all. Gibson has been accused of slapping his ex-girl friend, Oksana Grigorieva twice on her face. If this was not enough, then the recorded racial slurs made by Gibson has put him in probably the worst backlash ever.

The list of charges don’t end here, a former mistress, Violet Kowal also came out with revelation to a magazine that, due to the threats made by Gibson she was forced to leave town and go into hiding for a month. With his super-celebrity status, Gibson has got many controversies to his name; he even made anti-Semitic statements during an arrest, where he hurled racist obscenities at police officers.
The Oscar winning actor is facing a hard time battling it out with all the allegations and charges which has already tarnished his reputation, with plenty of bad press and anger. Though these charges may be a few months old, its damage is still hitting the star’s reputation badly.

Top 21 google search results for Mel Gibson

A glance at the chart and its plain that there are more negative contents and news about the star, with nothing much positive to report on Gibson these days.

At Reputation Management For.com, we feel this could be the end of the road for Mel in reputation terms. While people associated with him are probably re-thinking their ideas about him, Gibson needs to judge the situation well, before doing any further damage to his reputation. His legal and PR team has to settle all the allegations, before it ruins the celebrity status of the actor. If by any chance he comes out clean from all the charges, then he needs to go in for a well-structured reputation management plan to repair the lost reputation and rebuild a positive image among the masses. As Robert Einstein said “Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value”.

Justin Bieber Reputation and Cyberbullying

Justin Bieber was a celebrity ,well known  for his good looks and the top of the chart pop hits till recently. However now he is more famous for being the subject of  one of the fiercest online cyberbullying campaigns by the group, 4chan. As per the figures of Mashable.com,  4chan hacked YouTube sending pop-up messages across the site and redirected Bieber’s video pages to malware and porn sites. This is only one among the many attacks aimed against this young celebrity , who took the  virtual world by frenzy. For long Bieber was the poster boy in Twitter and the social network sites, which prompted the Bieber haters to launch a nasty  elimination program that would exclude all the mentions of this pop world wonder from any Twitter feed.

This vicious attack continued even during his much publicized  “Justin Bieber My World Tour” contest where his fans were invited to vote what country to send him to. The notorious cyberbullying group of 4chan took full advantage of this golden opportunity  and started a North Korea campaign for Beiber through 4chan’s website that  tells viewers how to hack the contest system. As a result of which  North Korea  overtook  Israel as the first choice for where to send Bieber next.

However,  Bieber will never be going to  North Korea as western music is banned in North Korea and most importantly  most  North Koreans do not follow Justin Beiber nor the internet and might not even know who Justin Bieber is!

Bieber has not come out with a public response on the whole issue so far nor his website has carried any updates on this scandal. Thus the fans and haters of Bieber have been left to gossip and speculate about the future course of action of this  gifted artist. However as the scandal has been all over the webspace for weeks, the best thing for Bieber would be to clear the air and to come out clean instead of  sitting on the issue and waiting the scandal to die down on its own!  Bieber, after all is only a kid who is too young to take care of his PR issues on his own. So his team  should use their reputation management skills to issue a public response to fans and to make sure that these scandals will not stop Bieber from bringing his music to his die hard music fans in Israel.

We at reputationmanagemnetFor.Com feels that Justin Bieber should get on top of the game by keeping the channels of communication with his fans open instead of leaving them to indulge in nasty speculations!

Reputation Management 2010 – a half year report!

Six months into 2010 and you realize the one thing that’s been recurring is big reputation crises. And how the mighty have fallen in reputation terms!! From Tiger Woods to Toyota worries, from BP oil spill crisis to Mel Gibson’s rants, from the Duchess of York scandal to the performance duds by the millionaire football stars, 2010 has brought its share of bad luck to haloed people and companies.

Reputation Management has never been this important and it’s sadly when a crisis happens that you actually tend to quantify reputation in terms of money. Reputation is indeed money and even if you argue that time is a healer, the business you lose in this period of crisis is never coming back to you.

The cool thing about Online Reputation Management (ORM) is that it encompasses PR, SEO reputation management, Branding and Crisis Management. You practically have your defense lined-up for you, ready for action. With ORM in place the bumpy ride to recovery from a crisis is largely smooth.

Finally by outsourcing ORM you actually get a whole team working for you round the clock. Being active on blog networks and social networking sites daily may not be possible when you have to go about your business. ORM goes a long way in protecting your reputation and brand online and should be part of your advertising or PR portfolio.

At Reputation Management For.com we’ve been ranking reputation of celebrities and companies based on how they fare online and we’ve often been alarmed at the naiveté with which  online reputation has been handled. However,  there’s much to be done to change this and this is where we come in. From regular monitoring to highlighting positive stories to damage limitation and burying negatives ORM is not be ignored.

For nowadays anyone can be an investigative reporter- a citizen journalist with phone cameras and other gadgets and anyone’s a paparazzo and celebrities beware! These are times of sting operations, consumer forums, and review sites all as keen on reputations as we are.

So yes, the year 2010 seems to be going down history as a year that could well use some reputation management on its own and here’s hoping the next six months see companies and celebrities with sound ORM in place.

Beware Corporate Wonk Humour Failure

1.3 million people have enjoyed Brian Maupin’s humorous attack on ignorant iPhone consumers and the equally amusing response. Everybody has laughed at the knowing humour except for some humourless corporate wonks at Best Buy who in spite of a total lack of connection between Best Buy and the video have suspended mobile salesman Brian Maupin on the basis that his video disparaged a brand they carried (iPhone/Apple) as well as the store itself and were fearful of stockholders & customers being turned off to Best Buy Mobile, as reported by Maupin.

In summary: individual makes funny comedic video about iphone buyers set in a magic roundabout setting without any branding or references to stores. BestBuy corporate HR department announce that it is about BestBuy and suspend employee.

Outcome: BestBuy corporate wonk sets up BestBuy brand to widespread derision for being humourless and painfully stupid. Incredibly, they have now made this a negative story about BestBuy, they have attacked a funny video and cut across the US freedom of speech rights. Arguably, what should happen is that they should have said nothing, or laughed it off. Why don’t they sack the corporate type responsible for this mess either because he has made BestBuy a laughing stock or, and why not, for being incredibly stupid.

Apple’s iPhone 4 Antenna Fiasco

You bought an Apple iPhone 4 and now you walk into one of their stores and say “My iPhone doesn’t work when I hold it in my left hand on the corner of that street.” Pat comes the reply, “Don’t hold it in your left hand and avoid going to that part of the street.  That leaves you with the only option, hold your iPhone as suggested by Apple.

The antenna misery of the iPhone 4 has enraged many customers, but denial mode seems to be the norm in Apple camp. Steve Jobs’ rather arrogant response seems he is asking customers to think if calling and receiving calls on their iPhone is really important. Another taunting tone from Apple is like ‘We are working on it.” so chill down relax, enjoy your holidays it’s just a phone and not a big deal.

Steve needs to analyze why every time Apple introduces a new product, it results in more pissed-off customers.  Look at the billions you spend only to develop some kind of crap or you think customers are stupid, and they don’t know to hold the iPhone?

As always it’s clear, Apple’s handling of this antenna thing is awful, it reminds me of how Steve handled his illness.  If Apple’s customers unite and force them to fix the issue will that look good for the company?

Reputation Management For.com- conducted reputation survey on Google top 20 searches only to find Apple’s Reputation Ranking in a poor picture.  Steve needs to wake up and smell the coffee, you messed up the whole issue by not respecting your customers.  Though you are one of the few who never admits when you are wrong, this time it’s serious. Face it, tender an apology! Ensure your customers that you will do whatever needed to address customer worries.

Tiger’s divorce settlement and reputation management

It seems that Tiger woods has a short memory, or so it appears by the current turn of events. After  the  numerous  flings of Tiger with many women stumbled out of this ace golfer’s cupboard, which was promptly followed by a much publicized rehab programme and a teary public apology- everything seems to be nothing short of a well managed stage show for the public now. Even though Tiger tried to be a loving dad on his daughter’s third birthday by bringing a charted jet load of toys to impress his family, his recent actions spoke otherwise. Even as Woods launched a final concerted attempt to win his family back, he’s been seen twice in recent days in the company of another blonde.

Just type in Tiger Woods in Google and the first thing that pops up is ‘divorce’, which clearly shows that things are far from rosy in his domestic front. His wife is reportedly  moving ahead with her divorce plans as she was said to be “violently angry” with him for  having exploited  his dead father  for commercial gain in his television advert for his sponsors Nike. The ad featured the beyond-the-grave voice of Tiger’s father Earl, who had a big role in shaping his career before his death in 2006.

As Woods was trying a desperate attempt to put his golfing career on the course, gossips about the impending  divorce settlement with his wife is doing the rounds. His wife is said to be demanding the ownership of the brand new £35-million home the couple have been building on the exclusive Jupiter Island, Florida.

Tiger is caught in a tight spot as his wife is also pushing ahead with the  full custody of their two children. The couple had  signed a prenup agreement for a pay-off to £13-million, however it is interesting to note that Woods is said to be willing to give Elin more than half of his £663 million fortune in return for  a lifetime confidentiality clause. Tiger will have to be wary of more wagging tongues that could spill out more spicy and untold stories of this talented golfer, who once grabbed the headlines for his stupendous personal achievements.

Tiger is playing a dangerous game and he may not have a second chance if he chooses to ignore his shattered image any further. The reputation rating of Tiger Woods, done by us at Reputation managementFor.Com, at the onset of his problems, still holds true as he has not succeeded or infact tried to regain his lost public image.

BP Global PR News

What can you do about fake twitter handles who steal your thunder? Well nothing!! BPGlobalPR is one such that’s enjoying a huge list of followers for his wry humor which seems to be the only way to digest the BP oil spill crisis. Re-tweeting his wisecracks, with the “BPcares” hashtag, have got me some weird comments from people who called me ‘insensitive’. I’ve had to explain that @BPGlobalPR is a fake account that yanks the ‘real’ BP PR chain.

BP has been dealing with this PR nightmare for long now and the latest effort has been in allowing writers to the area to convey to the world their side of the story. The company had placed a ban on journalists to the area and now seems to make amends with this new step. But then, no one seems to be buying it. Allowing their own PR guys disguised as journalists to provide interviews and other stories with a slant is really not going to help.

However, the papers are full of BP’s daily costs at handling the problem and is said to be at a total of $2.65bn (£1.76bn) and the problem has been raised at the  G20 Summit in Canada by both Obama and Cameron. They’ve agreed on wanting to keep BP stable while maintaining the pressure on them to clean up the problem. This means they’ve agreed to let BP continue their work in the Gulf of Mexico and BP shares has seen a slight increase in the market.

However, getting a BP sponsorship may not be something you need to agree on according to this BBC article

More than 170 creative artists have put their names to a letter attacking Tate Britain for accepting BP sponsorship.

The BP logo, the letter in The Guardian says, “represents a stain on the Tate’s international reputation”.

So, clearly being associated with BP in any way may not be a good idea for now.

Now onto other associated problems of the oil spill…  Americans who love seafood are a paranoid lot, if tourists are to be believed. You can see them tucking into shrimp and fish with a purpose on their holidays in Europe and Asia. Shrimp is the No. 1 seafood in the US and Louisiana tops in US shrimp output, so the Gulf oil spill has put a thick cloud over the future of the shrimp industry here. Feasting on seafood abroad maybe a good idea, indeed!

Let’s not forget that despite all efforts oil continues to spill by the gallons, the Google crisis page with the ticker is a chilling reminder. For now, we have the satire of fake accounts to see us through the Gulf of Mexico oil spill crisis and BP has to continue to endure the smart aleck jibes and carry on with their work and, of course, put on hold any endorsements plans they may have.

Reputation Management and HR

Does HR (Human Resource) play an effective role to strengthen your reputation? This has been a long debated topic! Well, being the most essential and valued part of any business HR to a large extent plays an active role in shaping the reputation of your firm. HR represents the company’s reputation internally which is most valued and includes answers to what the employees feels for the company, or do they seek a role in the firm, etc. It may seem a passive factor, but it’s a most vulnerable area, where most companies falter.

Building up a good PR and reputation internally in the company reduces more than half the chances for a firm to risk its reputation.

Monitoring the internal reputation is something which most of the companies overlook; HR needs to analyze the feedback from the employees. To act unaware increases the probability for the company to earn a bad name from its own employees, this further spreads like a virus, damaging the bonhomie. To have an effective HR department reduces the risk of such internal unrest and keeps the company’s reputation protected from any employee criticisms in social networks.

Social media too develops a strong link among employees and the company, bringing in a blog or message board helps to know what the employees are looking for or facing or lacking, and gives the company the space to restructure its plans accordingly. Employees’ interest account most for any firm to stand strong, and if the employees lose trust from the firm then nothing can be done. With over 1 billion blogs and other social networking sites it’s really easy to get a bad name, and when such negative stuff comes out from your own employees’ mouth then the damage is even worse.

Reduce the risk of a bad image for your business and keep your reputation high with happy employees and their positive image of the company with effective Human Resource Management.
