The girls and grass affairs that damaged Silvio Berlusconi’s reputation

Even as more reports of  allegations of sleaze and sex allegations of Italian prime Minister are being  complied by the press,  Silvio Berlusconi enjoyed a resounding victory in provincial elections. The alleged reports of sex, girls and marijuana in his private jets seem to have been ignored by the people of Italy,  a country in which politicians are held to far less exacting standards of moral conduct than in Britain or the United States. Tommy & Gail Sheridan Begin Perjury Trial

Wouldn’t it be great if the judge were to commence proceedings with “You’re under my perjurisdiction now, Tommy”? Ok, so it’s unlikely to have happened, but Tommy Sheridan is in for his toughest test yet as he’s hauled back in to court… for lying in court.

He’s clearly not the first person to have faced a bit of bad press, and he’ll certainly not be the last, but in 2006 when Mr Sheridan was reported in the News of the World to be having extramarital flings – he decided that the best way of handling the situation was to cause a big scene and take the media giants to court. Of course, whether he did or didn’t lie is now down to a jury to decide over the next 10 weeks the case is expected to last.

In his defamation case in 2006, Tommy Sheridan won £200,000 in damages after claiming that The News of the World had fabricated stories that detailed an alleged visit to a swingers club in Manchester and engaged in extramarital affairs with two women. Other accusations levied against the former MSP included excessive alcohol and substance abuse; both claims denied on the basis he was a “teetotaller”. In a case he decided to represent himself (after sacking his legal team in June of that year), the jury returned a majority vote of 7-4 in Sheridan’s favour. It didn’t take long for News International (the other side of Sheridan vs.) to launch an appeal on claims that false testimonies had been given and the sheer volume of witnesses attesting to Sheridan’s admission of guilt.

The whole saga has been going on for four years now, and Sheridan has been making no effort to shy away from the limelight and has declared his innocence in interviews, taken on his own radio talk show and even made an appearance in Celebrity Big Brother. The latter of which was because apparently he “needed the money”. Yeah those lawyers don’t tend to pay for themselves, Tommy! But to be honest, most of this could have been avoided.

When you fall victim to negative press – whether it’s deserved or not – there are ways to go about handling the situation. And whether you’re guilty or not, drawing attention to negative press is not the way to go about it. Your reputation is always going to have aspersions cast against it when accusations are made, whether they’re false or not. There will always be doubt thereafter, irrespective of an innocent or guilty verdict. Tommy and wife Gail could have managed their reputation a lot better by keeping press interest to a minimum. Newspaper stories go away if left alone, and there are ways of dealing with stories online via online reputation management, but at this stage it’s a little late for Mr & Mrs Sheridan.

Commonwealth Games 2010. India’s Reputation Fiasco

The 2010 Commonwealth Games was supposed to highlight how far India has come in the past 10 years, instead it seems to demonstrate that everything people thought about India is true. Read the rest of this entry »

Obama’s d(H)ate with Outsourcing and his Dipping Popularity

President Obama took to the stumps this week stepping up his campaign against outsourcing. The President on Friday emphasized his administration will offer tax benefits only to firms that create jobs in the country. It’s time for a bit of honesty, since the beginning of his presidential term, Obama’s personal popularity has surpassed that of his policies, which was obviously on shaky ground.  Throughout history, American Presidents have been elected mostly upon popularity, not because of leadership skills.

He seemed to be flat-tempered, candid and intense. He came across as thoughtful and open to debate. People who weren’t crazy about his policies normally liked and respected the man.  Yet his rhetoric remained unclear. There was speculation over his personality proving more popular than his policies.

President Obama’s reputation seems to be taking a dip after his much criticised health care plan and now follows the outsourcing.  As said above, will his policy bring down this popularity if only he and his bunch of Economist knew where they are heading to?  Economics is quite simple; do not spend more than what you earn. It’s about turning wealth from raw materials and every country in the world does this to run their economy. Some countries did that with IT and some with their manufacturing ability.

Barack Obama has to clear his stand since it all sounds staunch protectionist rhetoric. Just how practical it is since the Americans have lost every single manufacturing work to the Chinese and now that has happened they want to pin-down the outsourcing services also.

The President needs to realize that current economic system is blown up, the whole currency (USD) thing is just about matter of days taking into account that money moves around in cyberspace.  So things have changed and it will be stupid to even think that US Dollar is the final thing that would buy you a pizza no matter where ever you are in the world.

Obama need not sound like a sarcastic professor but be honest and come up with careful measures how he plans to bring the economy back to track.  Talking of the inevitable the President sounds duplicitous and polished and appeared rushed and extreme. The President has to inject this faith in his citizens before they start thinking that the US had its good times over and done with.

Tony Blair memoir and celebrity fixation!

Former heads of state are increasingly showing their frustration of having the limelight leave them. While all of them would worry over their legacy, the latest breed of former Prime Ministers and Presidents are looking upon themselves as celebrities. While most go onto forming foundations and world peace projects and massive libraries like the US presidents – it seems they all want to continue making world deals. And nothing packs a punch like a tell-all memoir!

Tony Blair’s autobiography, ‘A Journey‘ has had a Facebook campaign on to banish it into the ‘Crime’ shelves of bookshops. Eggs and shoes flung at Blair in Dublin all continue to show that on home-ground his popularity remains low and no amount of candid thoughts on people are going to get him out of having gone to war with Iraq.

The interesting thing here is how politicians are enjoying their celebrity status and like a celebrity memoir would do Blair wants to distance himself from Gordon Brown and even goes on to call his successor a few names. Spice is nice, so throw in a bit of gossip about the Royals and you have a best-seller from which he will not take a penny, no sirree!

Nowadays after national politics all former heads of state look forward to an international career. Well… they know all the leaders everywhere and look forward to continue keeping their career in the limelight. And nothing like a tell-all memoir to settle some old scores and re-launch yourself into active public life.

While celebrity memoirs are usually taken with a pinch of salt, PMs’ and Presidents’ autobiographies are studied at length and Tony Blair seems to have achieved BROWN(ie) points (pun intended) for his candidness even though he seems to have kept to his views on Iraq and Bush.

From a reputation management angle Tony Blair’s ‘A Journey’ may well be a start to more candid autobiographies from heads of states; celebrity candidness cleverly merged with legacy management and even a few pot-shots at some old rivals may soon be the norm.  In fact a memoir is a nothing but double winner for both reputation management and PR, really!

Pakistan’s bad reputation affecting flood aid

Natural disasters usually galvanize mass support like it did in Haiti recently, however the Pakistan floods are not building up as much support as they should. Why? The main reason for this is that Pakistan comes with a certain reputation. The country is known for being a hot-bed for terrorism, for having helped and supported the regressive and violent Taliban; for having harboured the ‘who’s who’ of Al Qaida and so on.

Pakistan’s national reputation if news reports are to be believed is standing in the way of aid to the country. No Hollywood stars or even Bollywood stars are raising the issue, no concerts, nothing being planned.

Shameful indeed, for the vast majority of those affected by the floods aren’t politically motivated and are innocent, peace-loving people.

Further damning was President Zardari ‘s ill-timed visit to the UK and France during the floods. To the rest of the world this served as reproach on the current government, weakening an already wavering reputation. This could very well be the end of Zardari’s political career and his quick visit to flood hit areas has not done anything for his public image.

As I write this post millions are waiting for relief, yet the world seems largely aloof!

“A gift for you”, will the blood diamonds stain Naomi Campbell’s reputation for good?

Naomi Campbell has been summoned to appear in court on Thursday by the prosecutors of the Charles Taylor’s trial for crimes against humanity.  The prosecution at the Special Court for Sierra Leone at The Hague claimed that Taylor gave a “blood diamond” to the British supermodel during a 1997 trip to South Africa.

Ms Campbell had stated in April that she “never received a diamond” – and refused to talk any further about the allegation. Later she told the chat show host Oprah Winfrey she feared for her safety if she became involved in the case.” These two contradictory statements made by the super model have dragged her into the case trial.

The story states that Campbell was given the stones at night following a 1997 dinner hosted by Nelson Mandela. “A Gift for you” is all what the two gentlemen who gave her the diamond said. When she realised it was not a few dirty looking stones, but real un-cut diamonds, she handed it over to her friend, whose name she hasn’t disclosed.

Taylor’s trail began in Hague in January 2008. He is accused of supporting rebels in Sierra Leone’s in 1991-2002 civil war. The Liberian Civil War, which was one of Africa’s bloodiest, claimed the lives of more than 200,000 Liberians and further displaced a million others into refugee camps in neighbouring countries.

The boiling feelings of the inhuman activities are prone to affect the reputation of the super model which is not new to controversy. Will Naomi Campbell be able to come out clean and will her reputation finally affect her work? The world has to wait till the court appearance on Thursday.

Commonwealth Games and India Reputation

The  Commonwealth Games which was touted to be India’s show of new power and splendour is soon becoming another show of the deep corruption that the country is pickled in. From the bureaucracy that needs to be paid in the order of their status to nepotism, India is unable to come out of  these ‘tags’ while hosting international sporting events.

To the nouveau Indian wanting to see development and the doing away of corruption and introduction of transparency, the fact that eight RTI (Right To Information) activists were killed in seven months shows there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

While a large number of people question why the country made the bid to host the CWG in the first place, others hoped the capital city will be spruced up to international standards. Terminal 3 of the Indira Gandhi International airport is probably the only saving grace in the corruption hit games now.

From exorbitant prices from treadmills to toilet paper, Suresh Kalmadi and honchos seem to have milked crores of rupees at every possible point. The money trails all lead to more sleaze and nepotism.

For sports-lovers the anguish is in how all this money could have actually given better protein rich food to the Rugby team or better facilities to sportsmen and women in the country.

For now The Commonwealth Games is fast turning into India’s shame and the 8% growth the country is showing seems to be all hollow. Sports in the country is really only about cricket and the highly successful IPL too had its share of sleaze.

Most people would tend to agree with former sports minister Mani Shankar Aiyar, when he shocked people a few weeks ago with this statement…

“I am very happy with the rains, firstly because it will ensure a good agriculture for the country and secondly because it will ensure that the Commonwealth Games are spoilt”

A day ago Indian football captain Baichung Bhutia came out with a more scathing remark…

“It’s not a good idea to host the Games. What are the parameters for hosting a good Games? Fancy roads, which we have (in Delhi). Fancy airport, which we have. But what we don’t have is proper infrastructure. The government is not aware of the real picture of our infrastructure”

India national reputation continues to be of corruption, sleaze and lack of transparency, but of late, a lot of it is being exposed through a watchful media and that is a huge change for the country.
