Sarkozy’s reputation ratings drop as Gypsy crackdown begins

The French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s crack down on hundreds of Gypsies has invited the wrath of many, with the Romanian Gypsy leader even comparing French President Nicolas Sarkozy to Romania’s pro-Nazi wartime leader. The expulsions have been criticized by many including the Roman Catholic Church and the United Nations that has resulted in a sharp plunge in the French President’s reputation. Even some members of Sarkozy’s government and political party have expressed grave concerns about the eviction policies. The eviction of Gypsies has come at a time when a series of financial scandals has hit his government and ruling party and Sarkozy is struggling to safeguard his reputation in the opinion polls.

France has sent back about 1,000 Gypsies to Romania and Bulgaria in recent weeks as part of its crime fighting measures as Sarkozy has linked Gypsies, commonly called as Roma to crime, exploitation of children and prostitution. There are over  10 million and 12 million Gypsies in the EU, most of them unemployed and living in poverty. Around 1.5 million of Gypsies live in Romania, which has the largest population of Gypsies in Europe.

Being members of the European Union, both France and Romania are bound by its rules whcih enable  its citizens to travel freely within the union. However the governments can send citizens of other EU countries home if they can’t find work or support themselves. Undaunted by the Gypsy eviction issue, Sarkozy is pressing ahead with his plans to strip French nationality  from certain categories of foreign-born criminals. Though many feel that it is part of unconstitutional populist measures, Sarkozy is moving ahead with these plans, which might get him a few more votes from a section of voters, who are in favor of these measures. Sarkozy perhaps need to do something to clear off the financial mess, his party is in before setting out on the eviction of these homeless Gypsies, which could well only be a publicity stunt to gain his lost ground.

Tony Blair memoir and celebrity fixation!

Former heads of state are increasingly showing their frustration of having the limelight leave them. While all of them would worry over their legacy, the latest breed of former Prime Ministers and Presidents are looking upon themselves as celebrities. While most go onto forming foundations and world peace projects and massive libraries like the US presidents – it seems they all want to continue making world deals. And nothing packs a punch like a tell-all memoir!

Tony Blair’s autobiography, ‘A Journey‘ has had a Facebook campaign on to banish it into the ‘Crime’ shelves of bookshops. Eggs and shoes flung at Blair in Dublin all continue to show that on home-ground his popularity remains low and no amount of candid thoughts on people are going to get him out of having gone to war with Iraq.

The interesting thing here is how politicians are enjoying their celebrity status and like a celebrity memoir would do Blair wants to distance himself from Gordon Brown and even goes on to call his successor a few names. Spice is nice, so throw in a bit of gossip about the Royals and you have a best-seller from which he will not take a penny, no sirree!

Nowadays after national politics all former heads of state look forward to an international career. Well… they know all the leaders everywhere and look forward to continue keeping their career in the limelight. And nothing like a tell-all memoir to settle some old scores and re-launch yourself into active public life.

While celebrity memoirs are usually taken with a pinch of salt, PMs’ and Presidents’ autobiographies are studied at length and Tony Blair seems to have achieved BROWN(ie) points (pun intended) for his candidness even though he seems to have kept to his views on Iraq and Bush.

From a reputation management angle Tony Blair’s ‘A Journey’ may well be a start to more candid autobiographies from heads of states; celebrity candidness cleverly merged with legacy management and even a few pot-shots at some old rivals may soon be the norm.  In fact a memoir is a nothing but double winner for both reputation management and PR, really!

Chris Myers Rumours and William Hague Reputation

Though unconfirmed stories of William Hague’s sexuality have been circulating in Westminster for some time now; with the emergence of the first hint of allegations surrounding his 25-year-old special adviser, Christopher Myers, rumour mills have been abuzz with the latest updates from his personal life. The fact that he hired a third adviser when his predecessors had just two after David Cameron has pledged to cut back on political advisers, was in itself a subtle nod towards the homosexual relationship rumours.

A series of pictures that showed Hague and Myers strolling in London had raised fresh queries about the nature of his friendship with his “special” adviser. The newspapers came up with more stories about the foreign secretary’s private life, questioning whether there had been a misuse of public money in the appointment of Myers. Hague, the coalition’s most senior minister is in indeed in a tight spot, as inquisitive journalists have filed Freedom of Information requests seeking information on the nature of trips  undertaken by Myers, how much he was paid and his detailed job description.

Things were far from smooth in Downing Street after the appointment of Myers, a 25-year-old with little expertise in foreign affairs, which ultimately boiled down to the resignation of Myers. Many Tory members felt that he should have had a job in Hague’s parliamentary office because he is a key adviser in Hague’s Richmond constituency and not as his adviser.

Downing Street was never pleased with the way Hague handled the matter and many Conservative members had expressed their displeasure in the messy handling of the issue by Hague. In the wake of these allegations Hague released a personal statement revealing highly personal details about his marriage and his firm commitment to his wife in an attempt to dispel rumours about his sexuality and to safegurad his online reputation. The dramatic statement by Hague, who confirmed that Myers had decided to resign because of the pressure of “untrue and malicious allegations” about him, came after rumours hit the webspace.

He seems to be doing what should be done if the allegations are true by going into details of his marriage. Somehow the story seems to be just unfolding!

How the Spanish tour of the First Lady influenced her reputation

The much hyped 5 -star holiday of America’s first lady in a lavish Mediterranean Retreat when the country was reeling under the worst economic meltdown has had a bad influence in the reputation of the first family. Though  the  first lady is paying for her own room, food and transportation, the government will be bearing the security costs  and support staffers, plus most costs associated with her Air Force plane. Many feel that this foreign luxury  holiday came at a bad time as back home Americans are battling with loss jobs and an insecure future.

The webspace has been abuzz with comments on this ill timed get away at the expenses of the tax payer’s money. Politics Daily readers comments like “A little restraint would be appropriate in these tough economic times. It would mean a lot to the American people who pay for all these vacations and outings and would go a long way towards better relations with the people of the U.S. ” are keeping alive the issue as the first lady gets ready for another spell of holiday to Florida and Massachusetts island in the coming days.

The worst thing is that it  has come close to the heels of the frock controversy  that  sparked ‘nude’ race row that spoiled the First Lady’s second state dinner. Michelle Obama’s reputation has been heavily influenced with these controversies that a Google search would come up with results like Spain vacation and state dinner dress in the top slots.

However, Michelle Obama is far too popular and should ride this controversy well but as they say  all things do add up; and a cross check on the reputation chart will do good at this juncture.

“A gift for you”, will the blood diamonds stain Naomi Campbell’s reputation for good?

Naomi Campbell has been summoned to appear in court on Thursday by the prosecutors of the Charles Taylor’s trial for crimes against humanity.  The prosecution at the Special Court for Sierra Leone at The Hague claimed that Taylor gave a “blood diamond” to the British supermodel during a 1997 trip to South Africa.

Ms Campbell had stated in April that she “never received a diamond” – and refused to talk any further about the allegation. Later she told the chat show host Oprah Winfrey she feared for her safety if she became involved in the case.” These two contradictory statements made by the super model have dragged her into the case trial.

The story states that Campbell was given the stones at night following a 1997 dinner hosted by Nelson Mandela. “A Gift for you” is all what the two gentlemen who gave her the diamond said. When she realised it was not a few dirty looking stones, but real un-cut diamonds, she handed it over to her friend, whose name she hasn’t disclosed.

Taylor’s trail began in Hague in January 2008. He is accused of supporting rebels in Sierra Leone’s in 1991-2002 civil war. The Liberian Civil War, which was one of Africa’s bloodiest, claimed the lives of more than 200,000 Liberians and further displaced a million others into refugee camps in neighbouring countries.

The boiling feelings of the inhuman activities are prone to affect the reputation of the super model which is not new to controversy. Will Naomi Campbell be able to come out clean and will her reputation finally affect her work? The world has to wait till the court appearance on Thursday.

Mel Gibson keeping quiet the Tiger way

Mel Gibson by choosing to follow the footsteps of the disgraced golfer, Tiger Woods has only made his reputation slump from bad to worse. Just like Tiger chose to keep quiet  Mel Gibson too, remained out of the media eyes as soon as the accusations of  domestic abuse and the rant tapes got viral on the web. Even when this celebrated actor was dumped by his agents at William Morris he chose to keep silent and to remain in the oblivion, which was a badly executed reputation management plan from his side.

Even When Gibson’s attorneys  fiercely defended their boss by firing salvos against  his former girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva’s allegations, Gibson never came out into the open. So, did Gibson also made a costly mistake by not addressing his serious reputation issues, which assumed massive proportions with every passing day. But, Perhaps his silence has made the public believe that the tapes were probably real, which made his situation worse.

Gibson might have played it safe as he is infamous for his vitriolic tongue and by keeping his mouth shut  he might have thought to scramble home safely. Mel has been through such issues earlier also  and with each incident  it is becoming all the more difficult for him to  salvage his reputation. Silence might be golden in real world but not in the web where making  noise is the best way to prove your point, pull the crowd and to safeguard your online reputation.

Mel Gibson reputation – Is the worst over?

As we mull over how Mel Gibson’s reputation, future plans and how even a comeback can materialize, he seems to have found some reprieve. Mel’s ex-wife has come out with a signed affidavit saying he was never abusive towards her or her children. This coming from a 28-year marriage does bring in some good tidings for the star.

However, there is still that question – “Will Mel Gibson go to jail?” to be dealt with and the legal teams are probably going to battle it out over extortion threats from Oksana Grigorieva and spousal abuse from Gibson being fought at length. From a celebrity crisis and damage control angle, Robyn Moore’s affidavit is like a God-sent for Gibson.

It’s almost certain that Hollywood will let things play out and wait for the outcome of the legal case for child custody. Whoopi Goldberg’s attempt at supporting her friend is frankly not enough, apart from the ‘racist’ tag Gibson also needs to fight his ‘misogynist’ and ‘abuser’ tag.

Like Tiger Woods who is now battling golfing trouble after his reputation debacle Mel Gibson will have to make a comeback that is so awe-inspiring that all’s forgiven in the name of art and cinema. Tiger Woods is well aware of this as well as he fumbles to get his groove back on the green.
