Katie Waissel – shame or opportunity?
The public don’t seem to like X Factor’s Katie Waissel. It might be that she is a bit posh with the cut glass accent and the eccentric styling. Each week, she just survives the audience vote with the help of the judges. The latest news concerning her gran’s activities as a high-class escort (aka prostitute) might destroy or be the making of Katie.
How she responds in public will be key. The upside for Katie is that it gives her some heartbreak which audiences love. Her persona to date has been difficult to grasp and the slightly insipid spoken personality can now become more overwrought. Reality TV is all about emotion and pain (witness the shenanigans on I’m a Celebrity… for evidence). Importantly she is unlikely to be blamed and having a dysfunctional family makes her like the rest of us. We can empathize which maybe we couldn’t before .
Hell breaks loose for Gordon Ramsay
The Hell’s Kitchen star, Gordon Ramsay well known for his vitriolic tongue and rants is back in the news – he fired his CEO, Chris Hutcheson, who is also his father-in-law and then has went on to fire more from his family from the business. Then there is the suicide of a former contestant on the American version of Ramsay’s hit TV show, Kitchen Nightmares. Read the rest of this entry »
Sean Lock Comedian Great Example of Bad RM
Went to see Sean lock in Perth the other night and was surprised by how much Sean did not control on the web when I googled Sean Lock. It would not take much for a few people who didn’t like his sense of humour to start writing bad reviews and blogs about him and his tour.
I have noticed there are definately 2 camps, those who embrace the net like Jimmy Carr and those that seem to be dragged to it screaming and shouting like Sean Lock.
Google over the last 12 months has really started to show where it’s going and how much focus it’s putting on reviews and feedback from customers. Many comedians rely on a good reputation in terms of being funny to sell tickets to their shows and DVD sales, what would happen if people started saying Sean Lock’s show sucked.
It’s worth the investment in protecting your name online if that is your brand, maybe Sean is just tight or does not value how much the internet is playing a part in business and entertaintment. Never has it been an easier time to influence people opinions through the online channels, don’t leave it to chance and make sure you own your space.
Tommy & Gail Sheridan Begin Perjury Trial
Wouldn’t it be great if the judge were to commence proceedings with “You’re under my perjurisdiction now, Tommy”? Ok, so it’s unlikely to have happened, but Tommy Sheridan is in for his toughest test yet as he’s hauled back in to court… for lying in court.
He’s clearly not the first person to have faced a bit of bad press, and he’ll certainly not be the last, but in 2006 when Mr Sheridan was reported in the News of the World to be having extramarital flings – he decided that the best way of handling the situation was to cause a big scene and take the media giants to court. Of course, whether he did or didn’t lie is now down to a jury to decide over the next 10 weeks the case is expected to last.
In his defamation case in 2006, Tommy Sheridan won £200,000 in damages after claiming that The News of the World had fabricated stories that detailed an alleged visit to a swingers club in Manchester and engaged in extramarital affairs with two women. Other accusations levied against the former MSP included excessive alcohol and substance abuse; both claims denied on the basis he was a “teetotaller”. In a case he decided to represent himself (after sacking his legal team in June of that year), the jury returned a majority vote of 7-4 in Sheridan’s favour. It didn’t take long for News International (the other side of Sheridan vs.) to launch an appeal on claims that false testimonies had been given and the sheer volume of witnesses attesting to Sheridan’s admission of guilt.
The whole saga has been going on for four years now, and Sheridan has been making no effort to shy away from the limelight and has declared his innocence in interviews, taken on his own radio talk show and even made an appearance in Celebrity Big Brother. The latter of which was because apparently he “needed the money”. Yeah those lawyers don’t tend to pay for themselves, Tommy! But to be honest, most of this could have been avoided.
When you fall victim to negative press – whether it’s deserved or not – there are ways to go about handling the situation. And whether you’re guilty or not, drawing attention to negative press is not the way to go about it. Your reputation is always going to have aspersions cast against it when accusations are made, whether they’re false or not. There will always be doubt thereafter, irrespective of an innocent or guilty verdict. Tommy and wife Gail could have managed their reputation a lot better by keeping press interest to a minimum. Newspaper stories go away if left alone, and there are ways of dealing with stories online via online reputation management, but at this stage it’s a little late for Mr & Mrs Sheridan.
Oh Lindsay!
It was going to happen but where will it lead now.
A recent Pop Eater poll suggest that “fans” are tired of Lohan shenanigans and want to see her jailed. Some 84% expressed their frustration at her behavior and suggesting that the Lohan brand is suffering from her drug addiction problems. Well, there dreams have come true with Judge Fox sending her straight to jail with no bail. The star had run something of a campaign online during the week tweeting about visiting AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) and accepting that she has a disease, all aimed at mitigating her plea and perhaps keeping her out of jail.
Where now for Lohan whose celebrity star is kept bright by all this constant paparazzi news but whose film bankability may well suffer. Is she insurable, we wonder.
Naughty or not naughty David Beckham
Men divide into two camps with David Beckham: those who love him and those who think he is a monotoned voice bore. The same dichotomy applies to wife Victoria: you either think she is a talented and sexy twig or you abominate her humourless demeanour and all round frigidity. If you are in the latter camp you tend to understand why David Beckham might have slept with the most expensive hooker in the USA. More enticing is her allegation she recruited another woman to help take the load (so to speak).
Does David Beckham help the reputation of Brand Beckham by suing a magazine for publishing the story? Probably as this is aimed at restoring the “fairytale” romance of the Beckhams which underpins so much of their brand ambassadorship. Was it the only way? No. If you can prove the magazine wrong, then demand that they print the true facts, ask for £1000 for charity and laugh it all of. Beckham, unlike Victoria, has always had a certain grace. She should work to keep it. As far as many men are concerned it is a case of “Good on you mate!”
Paris Hilton’s Swansong?
Lindsay Lohan’s career is nose-diving, no pun intended on nose in the light of her well-documented enjoyment of the white stuff. Erstwhile friend Paris Hilton is not far behind as Japan has banned her from entering the country following a drug violation in Las Vegas to follow her earlier bust in Cape Town during the world cup. What’s a celebrity to do with her won reputation in these cases.
Paris Hilton is an interesting species of celebrity. Unlike Lohan she was not a child prodigy actor. She has always been a puzzling character without discernable talent or taste. She talks somewhat like a retard and seems to swan around the world without reason. Yet she is famous and certainly adored by “fans” though the number of them has never been counted.
Of course Paris Hilton is primarily a celebrity for being a celebrity. She is a mirror reflecting a mirror and so any tittle-tattle is good for their career. The question reputation managers will be asking is whether they have reached the point where they think that all PR is good PR and are “numbed” to any longer term consequences. Paris Hilton described her arrest in Las Vegas as being “beyond her control” as though her lifestyle choices are no longer determined by herself.
Apart from the personal inconveniences they face: not getting health insurance, not being able to enter countries, they face professional issues such being uninsurable for projects such as film productions. In branding terms they face the most worrying hit. They are increasingly disassociated from quality product. As their fans mature they will likely grow increasingly disgusted by their criminal behaviour.
